The holiday season is a time for delicious food and busy kitchens, and it’s essential to remember that cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires. Keep your celebrations safe during the holiday season by following important tips to prevent fires and protect your loved ones.
-
- Never leave cooking food unattended. When frying, grilling, baking or broiling, stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the food. If you need to leave for any reason, turn off the stove.
- Keep flammable items away. Ensure flammable objects like paper towels, oven mitts, wooden utensils and holiday decorations are kept a safe distance from the stove or any heat source.
- Monitor small children and pets. Kitchens can be hazardous, especially during holiday preparations. Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove or other hot appliances. Use back burners whenever possible.
- Turn pot handles inward. Prevent spills and accidents by turning pot and pan handles inward so they can’t be accidentally bumped or grabbed.
- Be mindful of loose or baggy clothing. If children are helping in the kitchen, make sure they’re not wearing anything that’s big or loose. Baggy sleeves and clothing can catch fire or get caught in equipment.
If a fire starts, here are some steps you should take:
For a grease fire, DO NOT use water. Turn off the heat and cover the pan with a lid or smother it with baking soda or use a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires.
For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed until the fire is completely out.
If the fire spreads, leave your home immediately, close the door behind you to contain the fire and call 911.
ADDITIONAL KITCHEN SAFETY TIPS
Use timers. It’s easy to get distracted during the holidays. Use a timer to remind you to check on food regularly.
Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Make sure it’s easily accessible and that you know how to use it.
Test your smoke alarms. Ensure all smoke alarms in your home are functioning correctly, especially before the holidays.
