#FDNYSmart Spring Safety Tips!
April 11, 2016Second Annual FDNY Open House 2016
May 18, 2016Hi Friends! It’s Siren.
It’s my one year anniversary this month! It’s been a great year as the official life safety mascot of the FDNY. Being that I’ve been an EMT in New York City since I was just a little puppy, it has been my mission to provide New Yorkers with life safety tips to keep everyone healthy and safe. My best buddy Hot Dog and I have accomplished a lot in this last year and we will be busy in the next coming months teaching our friends how to be #FDNYSmart.
Firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics work hard to keep our city safe. When not saving lives, our members work hard to keep up our outreach and education throughout New York City. Hot Dog and I work together with our FDNY members to share our fire safety tips with visits to local schools and communities. Thanks to our strong Fire Safety Education Program, fire deaths have dropped steadily and studies have shown that there is a direct link to our strong public education programs. Hot Dog and I would love to come out to your school or community to continually educate you with critical life-saving strategies. To request a visit click here.
CPR is another important #FDNYSmart skill for you and your grown up to learn. According to the American Heart Association, CPR saves more than 92,000 people every year in the United States. Hot Dog and I are proud of the FDNY’s commitment to teach this life-saving, life-changing skill. The FDNY offers free compressions-only CPR classes as part of its ongoing Free CPR initiative. The “Be 911 Compressions Only CPR Program” has given more than 100,000 New Yorkers training in how to perform CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). To learn more about the “Be 911 Compressions Only CPR Program,” click here. The FDNY also has a CPR Program that targets New York City high school teens known as the “Be 911: Teens Take Heart” CPR Program. Through the program, members of the FDNY give an orientation to high school students on performing compressions-only CPR – or Bystander CPR – and educate students on cardiovascular health. Both programs are taught by a diverse group of certified EMS professionals. This year the goal is to educate more than 7,500 high school students. May is a big month for the FDNY. First, on Saturday, May 14th, Hot Dog and I will be at various Firehouse or EMS stations for our FDNY Open House. This is a chance for New Yorkers to meet Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs who help keep the community safe every day. Our houses will be offering tours, demonstrations and teaching everyone fire and life safety tips. We hope you join us for a day of fun. If you want to find your FDNY Open House, click here.
Also keep an eye out for EMS Week. This year our 42nd National EMS week will run from May 15-21. EMS Week is designed to give the FDNY and agencies around the country the opportunity to recognize EMS professionals within their organizations. In New York City, the week is also aimed to promote public safety, attract potential EMS recruits and celebrate the life-saving efforts of the more than 4000 members of EMS. Stay tuned for more information on EMS Week coming up. To learn more about becoming an FDNY Emergency Medical Service professional, click here.
