November 2, 2016Hi Friends! It’s Siren here. Halloween is my favorite time of year. I get to dress up in my favorite costume and get a lot of treats! This year is probably my favorite costume, you can get a sneak peak of what Hot Dog and I are dressed before the big day!
Friends, while it is a fun time of year, it is important to remember to stay safe as well. We don’t want any tricks this Halloween season, only treats. Here are some tips that will help you enjoy this holiday while staying #FDNYSmart!
First it is important to make sure your costume is not only fun, but practical and easy to see. These tips are good to remember when dressing up.
- Make sure your costume and treat bag are brightly-colored. Wear reflective strips on costumes so it’s easier for drivers to see you in the dark.
- Check to make sure costumes and accessories are flame-resistant. This will help keep you safe from fire.
- Costumes should fit loosely to allow movement and fit well enough to prevent tripping or catching onto trees or fences.
Trick or Treating is my favorite thing to do. But I will be sure to do the following and so should you.
- Carry a flashlight to help you see.
- Make sure children are with a trusted adult when trick-or-treating.
- A child should never go into someone’s home alone.
- Look both ways when crossing the street and only cross at street corners.
- Make sure to examine each and every treat before eating them to make sure it isn’t a choking hazard or has been tampered with.
Decorations are also a lot of fun for Halloween but don’t forget to be #FDNYSmart!
- Never let children carve pumpkins alone.
- Always supervise preparations.
- Opt out of using a burning candle in your pumpkin. A tea light or glow stick is a better choice.
- Be aware that hay, straw, dry cornstalks and other dry Fall and Halloween decorations are highly flammable.
- If you do use candles, place them at least 4 feet from other decorations and curtains.
- Don’t overload electrical outlets or extension cords with holiday lighting or special effects.
- Don’t use electrical cords that are discolored or cracked even if they seem to be working.
- Keep exits clear of decorations. Don’t block your escape route!
