Teaching Children to Be #FDNYSmart
December 29, 2017Be #FDNYSmart about Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms!
October 9, 2018Congratulations to our #FDNYSmart School of the Month, PS 177K The Malboro, in Brooklyn.
Public School 177 is a unique school community committed to the intellectual, social and emotional growth of each of its students. The school works closely with parents and values parent participation; we know this can improve fire safety in the home as students often share lessons they learn with their families.
Educators from PS 177 utilized the FDNY’s educational website – FDNY Smart – to initiate fire safety education for their students. Through the website, they coordinated trips to the FDNY Fire Zone, New York City’s state-of-the-art fire-safety learning center. At the Fire Zone, students have the opportunity to climb on a realistic fire truck, try on bunker gear, meet a firefighter and learn how to crawl through a smoke-filled hallway.
Visitors leave the Fire Zone with materials necessary to eliminate fire hazards in their own homes and to create escape planes for their families.
“We know that the risk of fire goes up during winter months,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “And we know that one of the most vulnerable populations to fire is children. Schools like PS 177 are helping us to save lives by reaching out, taking advantage of the incredible educational resources offered by the FDNY and FDNY Foundation, and making sure their students are armed with the information they need to save their own lives in the event of a fire.”
