Snow is Coming! Be #FDNYSmart
March 13, 2017Be #FDNYSmart When Celebrating Passover
April 7, 2017Hi Friends! It’s the first official day of Spring. While we may not be quite feeling it in the air yet, it is a good time to start thinking about Spring cleaning! This year, while doing your cleaning, be #FDNYSmart and make it a priority to do some critical fire safety checks to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe.
We just changed our clocks! A good rule of thumb is to also change your batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. If you need to replace your alarm, a 10 – year battery sealed alarm is best. You should also test all of your alarms monthly to make sure they are working. A working smoke alarm can cut your chances of dying in a fire by nearly a half! Be sure that checking and maintaining your alarms is at the top of your to-do list. Read more about it here.
Spring cleaning is a good time to get rid of clutter! Clutter in your home or apartment can be extremely dangerous during a fire. It can block easy access to escape routes or be easily combustible. It is always a good idea to go through your clutter and properly dispose of it. This is also a good time to go through your home and throw out things like expired medication or cleaning products. Once everything is all cleared out, a review of your family’s escape route is a good idea to refresh everyone’s memory. To read more about creating an escape plan, click here.
It is also a good time to check your electrical outlets and make sure everything is properly maintained and plugged in. Two-thirds of all electrical fires begin in plugs or cords or appliances like refrigerators, air conditions or lamps. Spring cleaning is a good time to make sure none of your cords of frayed or exposed. If a cord is ruined, you should get rid of it. You can be your own watchdog and remind your grownup not to run cords under carpets or rugs and don’t hang them from nails. Also remind your grownup not to overload electrical outlets and to unplug appliances when you aren’t using them.
